This blog aims to describe what is meant by ‘risk’ in the context of health and healthcare (i.e. “probability of an event in a person during a specified period of time). The blog also considers some of complexities of calculating and interpreting ‘risk’, including the difficulty of interpreting what a given risk at a population level means for a particular individual. The author goes on to explain that uncertainty and inaccuracy are inevitable in making judgements about risk but that being careful and seeking to reduce bias are ways in which this uncertainty can be minimised.
